Step Up, an organization that provides support services and rehabilitation for the mentally disabled, is expanding their program into a second location. The new construction of Step Up On Fifth will provide 46 studio units of permanent affordable housing, more than doubling their current capacity. The program also includes two levels of subterranean parking.
Anticipated to achieve a LEED ‘Silver’ rating, the building will exceed Title 24 requirements for efficiency and performance by more than 20%. Indoor air quality was made a particular focus, addressed through abundant natural ventilation and the use of low-emissions materials such as natural linoleum flooring, recycled-content carpet, and non-V.O.C. paints. Other cost-efficient sustainable measures employed include shading devices and solar powered hot water and heating. The strategic planning and orientation alone will make the building 50% more efficient than a conventionally designed structure.
