Pugh + Scarpa Architects

Architecture

For repeat client Stoney Road Productions, Pugh + Scarpa transformed a plain office building that had previously housed the same law firm for over 35 years, bringing it into the 21st century both functionally and aesthetically. Lead Designer Lawrence Scarpa’s concept was based on exploring the contrast between the horizontal character of the inherited structure and the sculptural quality of the newly designed furniture and walls, dissolving the existing framework in favor of “flowing total continuity.” He worked against the relatively low ceiling—the strategic removal of beams in one area not only allows more light to enter but also makes the ceiling appear higher. This cut into the ceiling gives it the function of a fifth wall, alleviating the claustrophobic “sandwich effect” that low ceilings often produce.

The existing interior space contained extensive mahogany woodwork, which was salvaged and reused whenever possible. With the rescued mahogany, he designed walls, furniture, and other built-in elements with a strong three-dimensional effect which work jointly to subdivide the space. These elements contrast the existing space’s inherent horizontal character; creating subtly striking visual effects such as a wall flowing into the ceiling and vice-versa.
